Is There Really Balance in Life? A Therapist’s Reflection on Seasons and Shifting Priorities

As a therapist, I often sit with people navigating the unpredictability of life’s moments when everything feels like it’s falling apart, and they wonder if they’ll ever have it all together. From my own journey and the countless stories I’ve heard, one truth continues to surface: life is not linear, and it’s rarely balanced in the way we imagine.

You may try to hold everything together career, relationships, health, finances, parenting, faith and just when one area settles, another begins to unravel. It can feel like you’re constantly juggling, plugging holes in a leaking boat. And this leads many to ask: Is balance even possible?

The Myth of Perfect Balance

We often chase the idea of a “balanced life” where everything flows harmoniously at once. But the reality is, life unfolds in seasons. Each season demands a different version of you, different priorities, and different levels of energy and attention.

Developmentally, we move through clear stages infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, aging and each comes with its own milestones, struggles, and growth. What’s crucial is learning to be present in each phase. If we miss the joy and meaning of our current season while longing for the next (or mourning the last), we risk living life in a constant state of discontent.

What Does This Mean for You?
If you’re a new parent overwhelmed with responsibilities … breathe. This season is stretching you, but it’s also forming you.

If you’re in a transitional space, new job, new city, or a relationship shift, embrace the discomfort. Growth is happening.

If you’re in a space of waiting or uncertainty, stay present. Life is still happening, even in the in-between.

Therapeutically, I encourage clients to practice acceptance not passive resignation, but mindful recognition of what is. From this place, we gain power to choose how we respond, how we show up, and how we take care of ourselves.

The Spiritual Anchor

While life changes, one truth I hold onto is that God does not change. In seasons of chaos and clarity alike, faith becomes the anchor. As scripture reminds us,

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart.” (Matthew 22:37)

When everything feels uncertain, this is the solid rock that grounds us. Our spirituality, however we define it is not just a part of life, it is the thread that can hold it all together.

Final Thoughts
No, you may not always feel balanced. But you can feel anchored.
You may not have control over every area of life, but you can choose to fully live in your current season.

Take in the moments. Laugh, cry, heal, rest, grow.

Today is here, live it well.
